Jade and her mom Lu-Anne are finally home, back on the West Coast with a new high school, new store, new life. No more moving, running, hiding. But Lu-Anne has a beau for the first time in years. There’s a girl stranger poking round. Jade discovers a magical secret along a seemingly forgotten shorefront. Will coming home tear mother and daughter apart for good?

Where the River Meets the Sea premiered on March 10, 2006 at the Yukon Arts Centre in Whitehorse, produced by Gwaandak Theatre and Nakai Theatre.

Playwright’s Notes – Patti Flather

It has taken many years for Jade and Lu-Anne to make it home. Literally! This play, originally my Masters Thesis at the University of B.C., began with teens on the Whitehorse riverfront. It transformed as I roamed the west-side Vancouver neighbourhoods, trails and shorefronts where my parents were raised – second-generation newcomers from the British Isles to a city unsure of its identity. Along the way I said goodbye to a beloved character and traveled across the country to get to know others better. Now it’s your turn.

The playwright gratefully acknowledges the following individuals and groups for their support in development of this play:

University of British Columbia, Bryan Wade, Charles Siegel. Terry Stack, Playwrights Theatre Centre, Chapelle Jaffe, Fu*Sha Theatrical Projects, Vinetta Strombergs, Jani Lauzon, Sarah Podemski, Jennifer Podemski, Hume Baugh, Red Pepper Spectacle Arts, Sylvia Hall, Gateway Theatre, Simon Johnston, Sarah Rodgers, Theatre B.C., Western Canada Theatre Company, David Ross, Lori Marchand, Nakai Theatre, Michael Clark, David Skelton, Sara Graefe, Penny Gummerson, Sally Clark, Leonard, Erin and Sophia. Julia and Osric Murrell.

Presentation House Theatre in North Vancouver, B.C. features Where the River Meets the Sea, directed by Brenda Leadlay, from March 19-April 4, 2009. For more information go to www.phtheatre.org
